By the time that you read this work should have already started on cutting the main areas of the churchyard. Since May the grasscutting has been confined to the areas at the top and bottom of the churchyard, which are regularly visited, the area in front of the church, and alongside the paths.

The strategy we adopted two years ago certainly seems to have worked, as this year there has been a noticeable increase in the wild flower population. In particular there has been an increase in the numbers of Lady’s Mantle and Ox-Eyed Daisy. By leaving the main cut until the flowers have had chance to set seed, we hope that these numbers will continue to increase.

To increase visibility the first job has been to strim around the gravestones. With this complete the next job will be to actually cut the grass. The purchase of a power scythe (see earlier article) will enable this to be done much easier and quicker than in previous years.

We are grateful to everyone who has ‘signed up’ to help with the cutting, trimming, raking, and the removal of grass. If there is anyone else who would like to help keep the churchyard looking tidy, please contact David Hill, Steve Bennett or Terry Squire. Please contact Terry if you would like a key to the store if you wish to leave a rake etc at the church to save carrying it each time.

Throughout the summer we hope to cut one section of the churchyard each week, meaning that each area should be cut every 3 – 4 weeks. As last year, a plan has been placed in the porch detailing which area of the churchyard is being tackled that particular week.
